All in all, a very good Regency. Likeable hero and heroine-both are "scarred" in their own way. The hero, mostly emotionally and the heroine physically. Unusual storyline that the heroine cannot walk and has been forced in seclusion by uncaring relatives. The heroine meets the hero quite by accident. I liked this one. Recommended-4 stars

Synopsis: "Even months after that day on the train, her face still haunted my dreams. And I was sure the feel of her in my arms would stay with me forever. But then one night, she stepped back into my life as if walking into my dreams. . . ."

Matthew Hawthorne saved Finnea Winslet's life one day on a train in Africa. But Finnea didn't know that on that day she saved his soul. Destroyed by scandal, Matthew would have been ostracized completely by the unyielding society of his birth had he not been such a powerful man. Matthew doesn't let himself care about anyone or anything, until Finnea arrives unexpectedly in Boston.

Raised in Africa, Finnea is as foreign to Bostonians as they are to her. Yet she is determined to make a life for herself there, so she turns to Matthew to learn the ways of that rigid town. But can Matthew help Finnea without losing what is left of his heart?

From the jungles of Africa to the heart of Boston society, DOVE'S WAY is an extraordinary tale of redeeming love that will rescue a man, and release a woman from the pain in her heart.

My Review: Dove's Way is a very moving and heartfelt Historical Romance. The storyline is set in Boston but is also halfway in Africa as that's where the two characters meet and where the heroine grows up. Finnea and Matthew are both "tortured" characters in their own ways. Finnea is very insecure in her familial relationships and Matthew was horribly injured and scarred in an accident. This story is very "high drama". You won't find yourself laughing or smiling during this book but it will probably make you tear up.

Some sexual chemistry, including a few fairly hot love scenes, nothing that should offend, in fact the scenes are more emotional than anything.

I'm looking forward to reading book two, Matthew's brother's Grayson's story in Swan's Grace.

5 stars.

Synopsis:

A fine and true friend, Calvin Garrett never anticipated what he would undertake in the name of loyalty to Lord Wolcott. Posing as a butler, he appears at the door of Wolcott’s fiercely independent sister, Abigail, charged with uncovering the strange and sinister happenings at her country home. Certainly, he hoped playing servant to an unconventional woman would be a short-lived task. But when he meets his stunning new mistress, the scheme he had in mind takes a turn for the tempting...

Abigail has never encountered a butler so...magnetic. However, he comes highly recommended and she is desperate for help. The troubles and danger plaguing her estate are enough to make a sane woman cling to strong shoulders, but her awareness of her new employee has much more to do with a longing from deep within her heart. Clearly, she has bigger problems than a dizzying attraction to a male. Soon, though, sleepless nights filled with danger and desire form a volatile mix that promises to turn Abigail from a confirmed spinster into a woman ready for love…

My Review:
I thoroughly enjoyed this Historical Romance. I like that the "wounded" character in the story was the heroine and not the hero. Abigail is a strong, smart heroine who has come back from tragedy to make a life for herself. The hero, Calvin, is a Marquis, born "on the wrong side of the sheets", raised in a workhouse, not knowing about his father until he inherits the estate on his father's death. Both leads are wounded souls-Abby physically and Calvin emotionally. The relationship was sweet and very romantic and the love scenes are in turn Romantic yet very hot:). A villainous side story completes this good book. The ending was a bit rushed, hence 4 stars, but I'd still recommend this book.

Synopsis:

Michael Vane, Earl of Sherrington, was once one of the most sought-after bachelors in London. But when a bout of brain fever left him prone to frightening seizures, he was scorned by the fashionable ton -- and he retreated to a secluded abbey on the English moors to mourn the man he used to be.

Back in his old social circle, rumor has it that Michael has gone quite mad. Desperate for an heir to his title, his grandmother gives him an ultimatum: he must marry -- or she will have him committed to an asylum. His choice is clear -- but who will have him? Luckily, Grandmother has a lovely lady in mind . . .

Thrice-engaged but never wed, Emily Merriman has her own reasons for agreeing to an arranged union with this melancholy stranger. For she, too, has resigned herself to a lifetime of thwarted desires -- until she discovers just how powerful love can be.

My Review:
too much a sickbed tale....,
March 19, 2009
I thought the premise of this book was interesting. A Duke who grew up normally, but after almost dying of brain fever, he suffers from seizures and withdraws from society to live as a outcast. His grandmother, desperate to help him, arranges with her friend, to force the Duke and the friends American daughter to marry.

The book started with this interesting premise, but quickly fizzled about 50 pages in. The couple meet, are quickly married and argue at the wedding and have no more interaction for another 50 pages. When they finally do, it's more a technical dissertation of the heroine caring for the semi sick hero, making up medicine and special meals for him. The romance is zero. Literally a chaste wedding at the beginning and one fumbling love scene at the very end. While I understand that the intimacy is supposed to be stilted because of the heroes illness, there not even attempts at intimacy. Then on top of it all, the author introduces this strange "fairy magic" side story into the book, almost as an afterthought. Unneeded and offputting.

Not recommended. 1 star.

Themed Reading Challenge-FINISHED

Join HERE:

February 1, 2009 - July 31, 2009

The Themed Reading Challenge is a six month challenge designed to help readers clear books from their to-be-read stacks which center around a common theme or themes. Here are the “rules”:

  1. Books should be chosen from the reader’s TBR pile (this may be an actual physical pile or a virtual pile).
  2. The goal is to read 4 to 6 books linked by theme.
  3. Overlaps with other challenges are allowed.
  4. Readers may change their list of books at any time.
  5. Readers may choose three different levels of participation:
  • Read at least 4 books with the same theme.
  • Read at least 5 books that share at least TWO themes.
  • Read at least 6 books that share MORE than two themes.

Themes can be geographic, genre, author, subject matter, or anything in between! Last year’s themes were wonderfully creative and varied and included such things as: books about books, books set in New England, books with a color in the title, books about vampires, books with the word ‘lady’ in the title, Gothic classics, fairy tales retold for adults, highschool classics, Asian culture, feathered friends, WWII, Canada, books in translation, and Beverly Cleary. There were many others I have not listed here!

The only thing limiting your choices is your imagination - so have fun!

I changed my theme to Romances where either the hero or heroine is disabled.

1 DONE-Bewitched by Heather Cullman (Historical Romance)-1 star.

2-DONE-One Night To Be Sinful by Samantha Garver (Historical Romance)-4 stars.

3-DONE-Dove's Way by Linda Francis Lee (Historical Romance)-5 stars.

4-DONE-Prospero's Daughter by Nancy Butler (Regency Romance)-4 stars
